Case Study McGraw Hill

KITABOO® Powers Math Workbooks in US schools

McGraw Hill (Everyday Mathematics) wanted to help students to build a conceptual understanding, computational fluency and problem solving skills in Maths. In order to achieve its goal Hurix helped the publisher to use the KITABOO® reader as a medium for collaboration and learning between teachers and students.

Requirement:

Being part of a big publishing house, EM Journal team knew they want to be associated with a solution provider which has vast experience in creating interactive eBooks which are easy to create and can generate eBooks at a pace that they want.
Not only the eBooks need to be feature rich, but they also have to be supported by a feature-rich eReader which can support the enhanced eBooks on multiple formats.

Solution:

Hurix proposed to customize its white label KITABOO® Reader to create separate apps for students and teachers. These apps were on multiple platforms including iOS, Android and PC/Mac. The apps contained bookshelf but had differential feature sets tailor-made to meet the publisher’s requirements. The workflow was designed to provide traditional assessment techniques in a new digital eBook format.

The student app would contain various books assigned to the student in the bookshelf. The student toolbox contained various tools like pen tool, text tool which was to be used by students to complete an activity. It also had self-assessment features which could give immediate animated feedback to the user. The student can sync the reader to save the work done by him/her.

The teacher app, on the other hand, allowed teachers to download their grade specific journals within the app. From a roster screen, the teacher would be able to select a specific class and student with ease. Thus through interaction with a server, a teacher would be able to view, check, comment on a student’s work. Features like sticky notes were also provided to aid the teacher. Not only a teacher can view, check, comment on a student’s work, but feedback could also directly be provided to the student using the pen tools or notes directly on the eBook

The production process of the eBooks was done through the KITABOO® Publisher, by Hurix’s Production team, and the interactive content was made available to the EM Journal’s team using a secure server.

Benefits:

With the use of separate teacher-student apps, workbooks they were able to achieve its goal having eBooks as a medium for assessment. It not only provided an intuitive way for students and teachers to interact but also made the process fairly easy. Assessments could be done from anywhere and all it required was a sync to the collaboration server to save them. The teacher app roster made it fairly easy for a teacher to select a specific class and student to carry an assessment on, hence saving a lot of time and efforts. Moreover, this was backed up by Hurix’s efficient production team which could convert and provide digital content to EM Journal at a pace that they required.
