Single-Sign-On-Integration

Simplify Access with Single Sign-On Integration in KITABOO

By Mike Harman | Blog, Digital Publishing, eBook solution | 0 comment | 9 February, 2024 | 0

Was it a Capital G? Did it end with an exclamation mark?

Forgotten Password? The button that taunts us every time we attempt to log into our portals on a new device.

Technology has integrated itself into most aspects of our lives, from social media to online learning. Digital learning has made education more accessible and engaging; with various channels and devices, different portals, and modules, students can now easily access the course of their choice.

Despite its many benefits, one of the most frustrating elements of this rapid digitization is the vast combinations of passwords we must remember. It is here that powerful integrations and sign-on mechanisms can simplify access to online learning tremendously.

Let’s take a look.

What is Single Sign-On?

Single sign-on is a mechanism wherein the user only needs one pair of identification credentials to access multiple applications in a single authentication step.

In this context, a student only needs their student ID and a single password to access all the learners’ databases that they are authorized to access. These could be digital libraries, assessment portals, course modules, or any other resources publishers have permitted them to use.

How Does Single Sign-On Work?

The entire process of single sign-on takes mere seconds to complete. It works on a relationship of trust established between the app and the publisher using a certificate of authentication unique to each user.

Let’s take a look at the process in more detail:

  1. A student launches the app or portal they need access to.
  2. The app then generates a request to authenticate the user and sends it to the Single Sign-On system.
  3. If the SSO system recognizes the user, it will grant approval and access against the authentication requested.
  4. In case the user hasn’t logged in, they will be prompted to provide the details for authentication by the SSO.
  5. After authentication, the students are logged into the app.

Key Benefits of Single Sign-On Integration in KITABOO

The KITABOO platform is built to make the digital publication and learning process easier, simpler, and more effective. With that in mind, the Single Sign-On integration on the platform simplifies access for learners and educators alike.

Benefits for Learners

1. Improvement in Learning and Outcome

Having only one set of credentials greatly improves students’ focus and learning capacity. It reduces the instances where students require login support for various apps and helps deliver a cohesive learning experience across all the associated channels and portals.

It also helps reduce the time it takes to log in to different portals and access the resources, thereby improving productivity along the way.

2. Reduction in Password Fatigue

If you have experienced inefficiency and long hours trying to recover lost passwords, then Single Sign-On integrations can help you.

Reducing the number of user IDs and passwords a student must commit to memory helps eliminate password fatigue. It frees them from the responsibility of keeping track of multiple passwords and user IDs, saves them time while logging in, and simplifies access.

3. Enhanced Learning Experience

Online learning experience greatly impacts how much a student remains engaged in a lesson. Part of that experience is the ease of access to the resources – of which user authentication and login are the first steps.

If a learning program requires a student to have multiple sets of IDs for each portal, the user experience is bound to worsen while increasing access hassles for learners. SSO eliminates this risk by requiring only one set of credentials.

Benefits for Educators and Publishers

1. Increases Course Registrations

Convenience and simplicity attract learners. If the sign-on process and onboarding are simple, the new candidates would have little trouble getting started with the course and continuing with it.

On the other hand, requiring multiple logins and authentications over different channels and having no synchronization or interactivity between the data on these channels would drive your learners away.

Single Sign-On is an excellent tool to boost new registrations.

2. Prevents Shadow IT Problems

With the increased use of digital resources, publishers and educators must employ some sort of monitoring tool to prevent unauthorized downloads or resource use. Without Single Sign-On, there could be an increased risk of identity thefts, leading to resource misappropriation and theft of information.

Single Sign-On establishes a unique user identity and creates flags when unauthorized access is detected, which helps prevent shadow IT conditions.

3. Enhances Security

Contrary to the popular myth that using a single credential to access all portals increases theft risk, Single Sign-On may prove more secure than multiple credentials.

This is because when students know they only need one password to access everything, they are encouraged to create stronger passwords that can’t be easily stolen or replicated. The SSO system authenticates the unique ID and works to prevent identity theft.

4. Combines Risk-Based Authentication

To further increase security for online learning resources, you can augment the Single Sign-On using risk-based authentication as the second layer. You can establish benchmarks of standard or normal student behavior for using the resource.

In case ID theft has occurred, the anomalies in usage patterns would then immediately highlight the risk factors and alert the authorities of a possible breach.
